Day Trips from Faro

Faro has no cliffs and no sea caves, so the Benagil tours on this page are day trips: the cave is on the coast west of Albufeira, roughly 60 km from Faro by road, about 45 minutes by car. The tours that leave from Faro are long – five to eight hours – because most of that is the journey. The rest are full-day outings in the east – Olhão, Loulé, Tavira – and in the lagoon. There are 10 tours here, from €34.

Good to know: If Benagil is the only reason you are looking, the shorter way is to book a boat that leaves from Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos – that is what the western Algarve sites cover. A Faro day trip is the right choice if you are staying here and do not want to drive. Access rules for the cave have changed over the years, so read the booking page for what the boat does at the cave, and what is on the itinerary besides.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tour to get to the Ria Formosa islands?

No. Public ferries also run from Faro to the islands of Farol, Culatra and Deserta, on seasonal timetables, so check the current times before planning around them. A tour is worth the money for the guide, the channels, the birdlife and the stops – not as transport.

Can I visit the Benagil Cave from Faro?

Yes, but it is a day trip. The cave is on the coast about 60 km west of Faro by road, roughly 45 minutes by car, and the tours that leave from Faro take five to eight hours. If Benagil is all you want, a boat that leaves from Portimão, Albufeira or Lagos is shorter.

Which island is best: Deserta, Farol or Culatra?

Deserta is the quiet beach island; Farol has a small village and a lighthouse; Culatra is a fishing village known for its oyster farming. The tour descriptions reflect this, and the five-hour tours visit all three. For a first visit, the three-island tours show the difference.

Will we really see dolphins and birds?

Birds are far more likely than dolphins: the Ria Formosa lies on a migratory route and the lagoon boats are built for watching them. Dolphins are mostly sought on the open-Atlantic trips, and no operator can promise a sighting. Check the booking page for what is offered if you see none.

Is Faro worth more than a stop at the airport?

For a day or two, yes – but know what it is. The old town is compact, there is a Chapel of Bones and a lagoon on the doorstep, and the islands are the real beaches. What Faro does not have is a big resort beach or sea caves; Praia de Faro is a sandy peninsula you reach by a short bus or car ride.

Do I need a car in Faro?

Not for the old town, the harbour or the lagoon boats – the airport is about 7 km from the centre. You will want a car or a day tour for the western Algarve, including Benagil.

How far in advance should I book?

In July and August the popular morning and sunset slots can sell out a day or more ahead. Outside high season, booking the evening before is usually fine. Most tours here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure, so booking early costs you nothing.
