Benagil Cave from Faro: is the long way worth it, and which tour?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 7 min read
Benagil is not Faro’s cave. It sits on the Algarve coast to the west, and a drive of roughly 45 minutes to an hour away. Yet “From Faro” is on some of the most booked tours of the whole region. So the honest question is not which tour is best. It is whether you should spend a day on the road to see a cave when you could spend it on the lagoon outside your door.
What you are going to see
The Algar de Benagil is a sea cave with a round opening in its roof and a strip of sand below. Its fame has changed what you are allowed to do. Landing on the sand inside the cave is prohibited, for everyone, and so is swimming into the cave. Kayaks may only go in on guided tours. That comes from the edital of the Captain of the Port of Portimão, which has applied since August 2024 and which the authorities restated in 2025. What this means for you: nobody steps out inside the cave any more, and you see it from the water, from the boat or from a kayak.
How far a boat goes in depends on the boat and the operator. Small boats can pass through the arch; bigger ones may stop at the entrance. The booking page of each tour states what it does. We do not promise a cave visit that the operator does not promise.
The five Benagil tours from Faro
Five hours, €48.84. The original three-stop tour to Benagil Cave and Marinha Beach is the most booked Benagil trip from Faro (4.6 stars, 3,337 reviews) and the cheapest. The operator promises cliffs, swimming in clear water and views.
Eight hours, €55.02. The full-day tour to Benagil Cave, Marinha and Carvoeiro (4.9 stars, 1,209 reviews) gives you free time for lunch in Carvoeiro, and at Algar Seco a chance to jump into the sea from the cliffs. It is the long day.
7.5 hours, €55.10. The 7 Valleys hike with Benagil, Marinha and Algar Seco (5 stars, 1,594 reviews) adds the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail on foot. Take it if you like walking, and skip it in the hottest weeks if you do not.
Five hours, €75. The 10-cave boat tour with Praia da Marinha (4.8 stars, 600 reviews) is a boat tour of ten caves with beach time at Nossa Senhora da Rocha, snorkelling and a visit to a chapel on the cliff. The operator lists transport from Faro as included.
Seven hours, €68. The kayak tour into Benagil Cave, Algar Seco and Carvoeiro (5 stars, 74 reviews) is the one for paddlers. It is a guided kayak trip and the only one of the five where you enter under your own power.

Is the long way worth it?
It depends on what you have already seen. If you only have one day for the Algarve coast, yes: the cliffs between Marinha and Carvoeiro are the best-known stretch of the whole region, and a tour from Faro saves you organising the trip yourself. If you have several days, consider that the lagoon is a quite different experience and costs a fraction of a day. Our guide to the Ria Formosa islands covers the alternative.
The cost of the day is time in the bus or car. Five hours on the tour is not five hours of your day: add the road there and back. That is the argument for the five-hour tours, and for checking the meeting point and the transport on the booking page before you pay.
If you would rather drive yourself, you can compare car hire for Faro. A car makes most sense for the boat and kayak tours that start closer to Benagil. The trips above are built around the departure from Faro, and each booking page says where you meet.
Who should skip it
Skip the full-day tour if you get restless on long days, or if travelling with young children who will spend hours on the road. Skip the hike in midsummer heat. Skip the kayak if you are not comfortable paddling in the Atlantic: the sea decides whether a kayak tour goes at all. Any tour can be cancelled for the weather, so read the cancellation and refund terms on the booking page.
And if you came for the picture of the sunlit cave with people on the sand, that photograph belongs to the years before the rules.
