Benagil by kayak from Faro: who the seven-hour tour suits, and the cheaper way
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
There is one kayak tour into Benagil Cave that starts in Faro, and it is not a short one. It takes seven hours, of which you paddle for one. The rest is a drive, a briefing, a stop on the cliffs and a long lunch break in Carvoeiro. Whether that is a good deal depends on how you feel about the road and about paying for a ticket that includes the drive.
What the Faro tour does
You meet your guide at the big “FARO” sign by the marina. A van takes you west, a drive of around 45 minutes by the operator’s own timetable. At Benagil beach you get a safety briefing and a short lesson, then paddle for an hour into the Benagil sea cave and the grottos around it. After a break there, the van continues to Algar Seco for a walk over the limestone formations, and then to Carvoeiro, where you have about two hours of free time before the drive back.
The kayak tour into Benagil Cave, Algar Seco and Carvoeiro costs €68 per person and has 5 stars from 74 reviews. The group is limited to six. Kayaks, life jackets, paddles and dry bags are included; food, drinks and towels are not. Guides speak English, Portuguese and Spanish, and you can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before.
What the cave rules mean for a kayaker
Landing on the sand inside the cave is prohibited for everyone, and so is swimming into it. Kayaks may only go in on guided tours. That is the edital of the Captain of the Port of Portimão, in force since August 2024 and restated in 2025. In practice you stay in your kayak the whole time, and the operator says you do not need to climb out at any point. A cliff jump at Algar Seco is optional and only happens in safe sea conditions; the operator says it takes good fitness and is at your own risk.
Who should not book it
The booking page is strict. Children under 12 are not allowed, and minors aged 12 to 17 may join only with a parent or legal guardian. The operator says the tour is not suitable for wheelchair users, pregnant women, or people with heart, respiratory or back problems, and that you should be comfortable with activities at sea. The itinerary can change with the tide and with sea conditions. If you are travelling with younger children, this is not your tour.
The cheaper way: start at Benagil
Two kayak tours begin at Benagil beach itself. The guided kayak tour of the Benagil caves and secret spots costs €27.92 for two hours (4.8 stars, 3,801 reviews). The Benagil caves kayak tour with a local guide costs €19.43 for two hours (4.5 stars, 3,362 reviews). That is €40 to €49 less than the Faro tour, and you paddle for twice as long.
You pay for it in other ways. You have to get yourself to Benagil, and the operator of the €27.92 tour asks you to arrive 30 minutes early, 45 to 60 minutes in high season if you come by car, because parking takes time. The groups are larger: the €27.92 operator says up to 12 or 13 people per guide, against six on the Faro tour. Their age limits are lower (no children under 6 on the first, none under 5 on the second), and both say the tour can be shortened or cancelled in bad weather.
If you want a car for that, you can compare car hire for Faro. Expect roughly 45 minutes to an hour each way.

Which one
Take the Faro tour if you have no car, want the whole day organised, and are an adult or a teenager with a parent along. The small group and the one-hour paddle are the honest summary of what you get. Take a Benagil-based tour if you will drive anyway and would rather spend two hours on the water, with a bigger group and a cheaper ticket.
If you do not want to paddle, the boat tours to Benagil from Faro are the alternative. For everything else on the water and the land around Faro, see things to do in Faro.
