Dolphin watching from Faro: speedboat or wildlife tour, and how good are the chances?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Every dolphin trip sells the same promise, and none of them can keep it. These are wild animals in open water. A good trip raises your chances; it cannot sell you a sighting. That is worth saying first, because the real choice between the Faro trips is not about the dolphins. It is about how you want to spend two and a half hours looking for them.
What lives off Faro
The coast here is where the sheltered Ria Formosa meets the open Atlantic. The two species a local operator names most often are the common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin, and both are present in Algarve waters through the year. That is no promise: where the dolphins are on a given morning depends on the fish.
A look at the trips themselves tells you how seriously they take it. The two most expensive ones put a marine biologist on board, and that is the difference you can pay for.
The trips
With marine biologists, 2.5 hours, €65. The Atlantic dolphin and wildlife tour is the most reviewed dolphin trip from Faro (4.8 stars, 734 reviews). The operator describes marine biologists on board who explain dolphin behaviour in its natural habitat. It is also the most expensive of the group.
With a skipper and a biologist, 2.5 hours, €52.25. The dolphin and marine wildlife trip has the highest rating of the group (4.9 stars from 413 reviews) and describes an experienced skipper and a marine biologist sharing facts along the way. That is about €13 less than the first trip for the same length of time and a similar set-up on paper.
Speedboat in the morning, 2.5 hours, €50. The morning speedboat tour (4.7 stars, 168 reviews) explores the Ria Formosa and the Algarve coast. The operator lists dolphins, birds and, with luck, turtles and “harmless sharks” as possible sightings, which is a more honest way to put it than a promise.
From Cabanas de Tavira, 2.5 hours, €38. The dolphin boat tour from Cabanas de Tavira is cheaper but starts east of Faro, and its rating is the lowest of the group (3.6 stars from 109 reviews). It makes sense if you are staying near Tavira, not if you are in Faro.

Big boat or speedboat?
A speedboat covers more water in 2.5 hours, which matters if the dolphins have moved off. It is also bumpier, closer to the surface and louder, and it is open to wind and spray. A calmer boat with a biologist gives you more explanation and a steadier platform for photographs. Neither is the better boat for everyone.
If you get seasick, the open Atlantic is a different proposition from the lagoon. We cannot give medical advice; ask a pharmacist or your doctor before the trip, and choose a morning departure when the sea is usually calmer. Sitting in the middle of the boat and watching the horizon costs nothing and helps some people.
How to improve your chances
Go in the morning if you can. The one speedboat tour on this list leaves in the morning; the sea is generally calmer then, and calm water makes it easier to spot a fin. Book earlier in your stay than later, so that if the trip is cancelled for the sea you still have a day to try again; the booking page of each trip says what happens when the operator cancels.
If you are choosing between the two biologist trips, about €13 is not much. The real question is what you want on board: the trip with the most reviews, or a similar format for less money and the highest rating.
If you see none
Some trips will come back with nothing. That does not mean the operator did anything wrong. Read the cancellation and refund terms on the booking page before you pay, and read recent reviews to see how often travellers report sightings. Reviews are the only real evidence you have, and the first trip has more than 700 of them.
If one morning is all you have and you would rather not gamble on it, the calm lagoon is the safer choice for a good outing. See Ria Formosa boat trips from Faro, the other trips under birdwatching and wildlife tours, and the island trips under boat tours to the Faro islands.
