Ria Formosa boat trip from Faro: solar boat, small boat or sunset catamaran?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Search for a boat trip in Faro and most of what you find is the same place sold in a dozen ways: the Ria Formosa, the lagoon behind a chain of sandy barrier islands that Portugal counts among its seven natural wonders. The trips look alike on the booking page. They are not. A one-hour sunset ride and a two-hour bird tour have little in common except the water.
What you are actually sailing on
The Ria Formosa is a protected natural park, about 60 kilometres of coast with channels, salt marsh and sandbanks between Ancão and Manta Rota. Faro sits in its western part. Boats leave from the Faro side of the lagoon; the exact meeting point is on each booking page.
Two things follow from that geography. The trips are calm: you are inside a lagoon, not on the open Atlantic, so this is not a seasickness gamble. And they are unhurried: this is a protected area, and the point is to look. If you want speed and open sea, that is the dolphin trip, and we cover it in dolphin watching from Faro.
The four kinds of trip
Small boat with a local guide, one hour. The small-boat tour with a local guide runs on a comfortable pontoon boat along the lagoon and the walls of the Old Town. It costs €26.50 per person and is the most general of the group: a bit of history, a bit of wildlife, no particular theme.
Solar-powered boat, one hour. The solar boat tour costs €25 per person and the operator describes it as an eco-friendly trip through the marshland. The point of a solar boat is the quiet: no engine noise, so you hear the birds. It is the cheapest option here.
Sunset, one hour. There are several: a sunset trip on a solar boat at €30, a guided sunset trip by catamaran at €30, and a sunset trip led by a biologist at €30 that passes the barrier islands of Deserta and Farol. Sunset tours start at €30 per person across the board, so the choice is about the boat and the company, not the price. The solar-boat sunset trip is the best known of the group, rated 4.8 from 349 reviews.
Birdwatching, two hours. The bird-watching solar boat tour costs €40 per person. The operator says hundreds of migratory birds visit the Ria Formosa every year. There is also a guided bird-watching trip on a pontoon boat for €42.40. See all of them in birdwatching and wildlife tours.

What these trips do not include
Be clear about what an hour buys. A one-hour trip is a ride, not an outing: it does not land you on a beach. If you want to step onto sand, swim and walk, you need one of the island trips, which take three hours or more; we compare them in Deserta, Farol, Culatra and Armona.
Sunset trips also depend on the sky and the tide. The lagoon is tidal, and operators set the route on the day, so you may not see exactly what the photos show. Cloud can take the colour out of the evening, and the booking page states what happens if the trip is cancelled for weather. Check that before you pay, not after.
When to go
Sunset falls close to nine in the evening at midsummer and around half past five in midwinter, so a “sunset trip” is a very different evening in July and in December. The operator gives the departure time for the day you pick. In the heat of summer, the evening trip is also the more comfortable one: the lagoon has little shade, and a one-hour trip at midday means an hour in the sun.
Which one for whom
If you have one evening and one hour, book the sunset trip on the solar boat. It has the most reviews of the sunset group, it costs the same as the others, and the quiet is the reason to be on the water. If you are travelling with someone who cares about birds, take the two-hour bird tour and ignore the sunset. If the price matters most, the one-hour solar boat at €25 is the cheapest way onto the lagoon. And if you want to see the Old Town from the water as well as the wildlife, the small-boat tour with a local guide is the one that mentions the town walls.
Travelling with children? The format is easy, one hour, no waves, but minimum ages and any rules on small children are set by each operator and shown on the booking page. We have no figures for them, so we do not give any.
All Ria Formosa sunset trips are collected under sunset tours in Faro, and the full range of lagoon trips is in boat tours to the Faro islands.
