Ria Formosa by kayak or by bike: what the active tours around Faro offer

Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read

A kayak paddled through still water between salt marsh banks

The boat trips in the Ria Formosa get the reviews: several hundred each, and the big island trips thousands. The active alternatives (a kayak in the marshes, a bike along the lagoon) are a different market. They are smaller, and almost none has more than a few dozen reviews. If you want to see the lagoon under your own power, that matters for how you read the listings.

The review problem, up front

Take the numbers on this page as a rough guide and no more. The most reviewed active tour in the Ria Formosa that we list, a Segway ride, has 210 reviews. The kayak and bike tours below have between one and 31. A 5-star rating from one reviewer is not the same as 4.9 from 2,000. Where a rating rests on a handful of reviews, we show how many.

Kayak and paddleboard

Guided kayak, two hours. The Ria Formosa kayak trip costs €53 per person (4.7 stars, 18 reviews). The operator takes you into the marshland and lagoon with a professional guide who points out the wildlife.

Kayak with gear and a lesson, two hours. The kayak tour with gear costs €35 (4 stars, 14 reviews) and comes with a technique lesson, all the equipment, a short guided stretch through the channels and then free time to paddle on your own. It is €18 cheaper than the other kayak trip; the difference you should look at is what is guided and what is free paddling.

Stand-up paddleboard, two hours. The SUP tour with gear is €35 and has the same structure: a lesson, equipment and free time. It has one review, so there is nothing to compare it with.

Bike and e-bike

Guided bike tours, three hours. The bike tour through the Ria Formosa from Faro costs €53 (4.2 stars, 31 reviews). The operator promises a guide who points out birds and wildlife and explains the traditional Algarve way of life that still exists here. The guided bike tour from Quinta do Lago costs €55 (4.8 stars, 22 reviews) and its description gives the length as 2.45 hours.

A longer ride. The four-hour guided bike tour from Quinta do Lago at €90 for four hours is described as an easy 20 km ride along lagoons and salt marshes. It has one review.

E-bikes. The e-bike tour through the Ria Formosa, Quinta do Lago and Praia de Faro is €40 for four hours (4.7 stars, 3 reviews). If you would rather set your own route, the full-day e-bike rental in Faro is €65 and mentions the Old Town streets and the natural park, where you may see flamingos and other birds. In Olhão, a bike rental with helmet and lock costs €20 and comes with route tips from the rental team.

The Segway alternative

If you would like a guide and the natural park but not the effort, the Segway tour with birdwatching is the best supported option here: 1.5 hours, €56, 4.9 stars from 210 reviews. The operator says the park is located 20 minutes outside Faro. A longer version adds a seafood lunch at a restaurant on Faro Island, with a hiking trail by Segway: the Segway tour with seafood lunch costs €120 for three hours.

Kayak or bike?

Pick the kayak if you want to be on the water and close to the marsh birds, and you do not mind sitting in a boat for two hours. Pick a bike if you would rather cover more ground and stop where you like. For both, the sun, the tide and the wind decide how the day goes; check the booking page for what the operator does when conditions are poor, and for the minimum age and any fitness requirements, which we do not list because we have no figures for them.

If you would rather not do either, a quiet solar boat on the lagoon gets you into the same landscape without the effort. And if you want a beach at the end of it, the Ria Formosa islands are the better choice. For everything else, see things to do in Faro.
